The calming effect of smoke on bees has been recognized since ancient times. Modern understanding reveals that smoke masks alarm pheromones released by guard bees or injured bees during inspections. This interruption of defensive responses allows beekeepers to work safely with hives.
Additionally, smoke triggers a feeding response in bees, as they anticipate potential hive abandonment due to fire. Note that smoke has limited effectiveness with swarms, as they lack honey stores and tend to be less defensive without an established hive to protect.
